  • Travel Note

    On March 13, 2014, the workshop "Frontiers of Hadronic Physics: Brains Recirculate Two" was held at the Brookhaven National Lab. (BNL) located in Long Island, New York. This is a second workshop supported by the "JSPS Strategic Young Researcher Overseas Visits Program for Accelerating Brain Circulation" under which we can send posdocs and students from RIKEN to BNL as long term (more than 300 days) or short term visitors between 2013 through 2015. I (Tetsuo Hatsuda) is a frequent visitor to the phys. dep. of BNL since 90's, and visited BNL this time as a PI of this program. As you may know, BNL was established in 1947 originally to pursue basic an applied researches on nuclear physics, but is now expanded to high energy physics, nano science, chemistry, environmental science, life science and computational science. In physics, BNL is the well-known place for the discovery of elementary particles (such as the muon neutrino, the K meson, the Omega baryon, the J/Psi, etc), for the discovery of fundamental laws of nature (such as the parity violation and the CP violation) and for the discovery of extreme state of matter (such as the quark-gluon plasma). BNL has so far produced seven Nobel prizes. The photo is the "Interdisciplinary Science Building (ISB) " for Energy Research in BNL just opened in April 11, 2013 next to the physics building. Isn't it wonderful if we can have a RIKEN iTHES building with this size?

    Emiko Hiyama
    Self-introduction
    I am Emiko Hiyama, an associate chief scientist of strangeness nuclear physics laboratory. After I obtained PhD at Kyushu Univ. in 1998, I moved to RIKEN as a PD. And after PD, I was an associate researcher. And I moved to Nara Women’s Univ. in 2004 and spent 4 four years there. In 2008, I moved to RIKEN. My research is to develop calculation method for few-body problem named by Gaussian Expansion Method which has been proposed some 30 years ago. This method is one of powerful method which is applicable to various fields such as atomic physics, hypernuclear physics, nuclear physics of unstable nuclei etc. Now, iTHES project has being run to develop science among physics, biology, and chemistry etc. I am quite interested in applying our own method to such field including physics.
