Happy Girl's Day
Today, March 3rd is celebrated as Girl's Day in Japan. It is a day to wish for healthy growth of young girls. What's special about the celebration is a display of dolls which dress in a way of old Heian-era. They are put on platforms with sometimes up to six steps, and called Hina-ningyo.

"Nuclear symmetry energy from nuclear observables"
An iTHES visitor, Dr Stefano Gandolfi, gave a seminar in the
iTHES-RIBF Joint Seminar held at RIBF Conference Room on Feb. 26th.
He delivered an excellent lecture on properties of the homogeneous
and inhomogeneous neutron matter calculated with the Auxilially Field
Diffusion Monte Carlo (AFDMC) method. He also discussed connections
to the structure of the neutron star and to the nuclear energy density
functionals. There was intense discussion after his presentation,
including both theorists and experimentalists.

We have successfully finished the RIKEN-OIST joint mathphys workshop last week.
It has been held for three days (25th-27th February 2014),
and the main organizer was Dr. Shingo Torii of iTHES fund phys team
We have enjoyed 10 talks,
4 talks from RIKEN iTHES, 4 talks from OIST, 1 talk from U. Tokyo and
1 talk from U. Osaka/iTHES. In addition to the speakers, we have
several more participants: iTHES group director prof. Hatsuda,
and one student from Osaka U., and one student
from OIST spin physics unit, and several more faculties from OIST.
All the talks were very interesting and we enjoyed exciting discussions.
Interestingly, most of the talks were focused into two categories:
magnetic fields and spins. And these correlated in a organic manner,
which was nice. People in OIST also enjoyed the workshop, and we thought
this workshop was a good starting point for exchanging ideas between

I am a theoretical/computational chemist.
I have joined Theoretical Molecular Science Laboratory since 2008.
In the laboratory, a broad range of researchers, from young to old (as me) and from quantum to coarse-graining specialists, work together to explore the complex biological phenomena on the basis of molecular science by developing and applying the molecular simulation techniques.
My current research focus is to figure out how do flexible biomolecules achieve precise biological functions.
Main object is glycans (a chain of carbohydrates) that actively participate in the cellular processes such as cell-to-cell communication.
Glycans are quite “shy”; barely show their molecular shape, veiling their functional mechanisms.
Our ongoing efforts, with the aid of modern molecular simulation techniques, would soon unveil their shape and behavior in cellular environment; make glycans “showy”.
I hope that further active collaborations in RIKEN with “showy” glycans would open new active research area.
